Paladins get a bad rap. People assume they’re all goody-two-shoes, law-first, fun-last holy crusaders who yell “SMITE” at everything and ruin party decisions with moral lectures.
But a great Paladin?
A great Paladin grapples with faith, justice, and sacrifice — and becomes one of the most compelling characters at the table.
Whether you’re playing a classic knight, a vengeance-driven avenger, or a reluctant chosen-one, here are 5 tips to make your Paladin unforgettable — and actually fun to play with.
1. Choose a Code, Not a Caricature
Your Paladin’s Oath is more than a subclass. It’s a belief system — something they’ve committed to with heart and consequence.
But that doesn’t mean they always follow it perfectly. The best Paladins struggle with their ideals:
What happens when the lawful thing isn’t the right thing?
What if justice demands vengeance?
What if protecting the innocent means breaking your vow?
Tip: Work with your DM to define gray areas in your Oath. Your Paladin should wrestle with it — not recite it.
2. Be the Party’s Shield, Not Its Morality Police
You’re a protector, not a prosecutor. That means standing up for your allies — not against them every time they break a rule.
Call them out in-character when it matters, not every session
Offer to take the fall for a morally gray plan
Show that your loyalty to your friends is part of your code
Don’t ask, “Would my Paladin allow this?”
Ask, “How does my Paladin struggle with this — and what choice will change them?”
3. Make Your Divine Power Feel Personal
Anyone can say, “I cast Divine Smite.” But you’re channeling sacred purpose — so make it feel like it means something.
Is your power radiant, like a burning sword?
Cold and distant, like divine judgment?
Subtle, like whispered prayers and flickering light?
Flavor your smites, auras, and Lay on Hands with imagery tied to your god, cause, or oath.
“I press a hand to his wound, and the brand on my chest glows — not with warmth, but with judgment.”
4. Ask Your DM to Challenge Your Beliefs — Not Just Your AC
A Paladin’s growth arc should include more than hit points.
Talk to your DM about putting your faith to the test:
An enemy who shares your oath, but twists it
An NPC who begs for mercy your code forbids
A god who goes silent when you need them most
The best Paladins don’t just fight evil — they define what evil is… and question whether they’re still on the right side.
5. Let Your Paladin Fail — and Choose Redemption
Paladins who never falter can become boring fast. But Paladins who make a mistake — and then fight to reclaim their honor, renew their faith, or forge a new path — that’s rich storytelling.
Break your oath and try to earn it back
Change oaths mid-campaign (with DM approval)
Swear loyalty to a person instead of a cause
You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to keep trying.
